Fine, okay, I agree with your statements generally, because Australia is turning out to be mini- America. Melbourne was where I was born, and its my favourite city by far. Sydney, is just sooooo, well, its like any major international city but with less people and recognisably Austrlaian landmarks plopped into the surroundings.
You haven't offended me btw. Only deeply, deeply hurt me. And Australia is the best place in the world and you're a blind bat not to have recoginsed this.
Oh dear. I didn't want to be Australia-bashing at all. In hindsight I should have put in that as a city, I'd much rather live in Melbourne than Sydney, as it has those qualities that a major international lacks. In short, it's own identity. I was bemoaning the lack of warmth I felt there. And what right do we, as visitors, have to it, I suppose? What it comes down to is, I'm just grumpy because I've come all this way and I have no time to take in the things that make this place great. I may as well be touring Siberia.

Basically the last thing I wanted to do was have a go at Australians or Australia. So if you were serious, I'm very sorry if I hurt you. If you weren't, you're a bugger and I take it all back.

I agree with your general statements and do think you were being remarkably even handed. When I hate a city, I really, really hate it.
I loathe huge swathes of Sydney and chunks of Singapore.
I think the lack of warmth is the general social climate at the moment, which is, as a friend desribed it, "Kinda tetchy".
But, if you have time, please, please get out of the cities.
Adelaide's pracically a country town, why not try there? But seriously, see some bush and whatnot. The rest isn't Australia.
A side note: Are you seeing "Australia" the movie when it comes out? I really don't know what to think of it yet.
Oh, the Aussie 'Gone with the Wind?' Or perhaps the Dirtwater Dynasty- your mum might remember that. Or it may never have got on Aussie TV, I don't know. When I first saw the posters I assumed it was a pisstake. A tourism board thing or something. But, Mr Luhrmann is pretty good. I abhor the walking painting that is Mz Kidman- she makes plywood go 'yeah, she's wooden' But I'm a sucker for a dashing cad and you can't get much better than Hugh Jackman. So, no doubt I'll watch it at some point, but in the comfort of my own home, for as little money as possible. While I'm here I'm trying to spend as little time indoors as possible. You're right about cities not being Australia- I was thinking about it and you're just not city folk. The harried looks people had on the streets of Sydney make that painfully clear. I missed Great Ocean Road, missed the Blue Mountains- no time. No time, woe is me.

Oh, and seeing as it's an all Aussie cast and crew, he's clearly cleaning up at the Oscars for Foreign Film, and most likely cinematography. And maybe even best acress for Nicole.
